About KwaZulu Natal Society of Arts
Established in 1906, the KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts (KZNSA) is an integral part of the culture and heritage of this South African province. Being located in the city of Durban (which is the capital of the province), this gallery was initially set up as a more casual platform on which artists could get together and exhibit their work. However, over the generations, the establishment has grown and evolved. Today, it is one of the widest known and best respected galleries in the province, representing the talent and diversity of a fascinating country that continues to surge ahead and develop.
Interestingly, the KZNSA not only represents local artists, but exhibits work from artists all over the world. The on-site shop is an important part of marketing and selling the work on display, making it available to art enthusiasts and those with an appreciation for all things beautiful and innovative.
There are a number of exhibition areas. These range from small and intimate, to large and spacious; depending on the needs of the individual artist. The Park Gallery is 10 x 6 metres and is especially suited to smaller displays. The Main Gallery covers a floor space of 160 square metres and is ideal for large exhibitions that demand a modern, well-lit space. The Mezzanine Level can add to the display area of the Main Gallery, or can host a small exhibition of its own.
This non-profit organisation is also an education service provider, offering walkabouts with the artist or the curator in a bid to add to the experience and showcase the work and create the tie between the public and the artists, as well as catalogues, seminars and conferences. Tourists, school groups and local Durbanites are invited to enjoy the creativity and the social messages conveyed by means of unique pieces of art at KZNSA.
