The agricultural town of Underberg is comfortably perched along the UMzimkulu River, and in the foothills of the magnificent southern Drakensberg Mountain Range. Such natural beauty and abundance is quite special, and is best enjoyed during time spent outdoors. Pennygum Rafting and Tubing invites visitors to explore the loveliness of the KwaZulu-Natal Province while having the time of their lives on the water of the river.

Just six kilometres from the centre of Underberg, Pennygum takes its guests down the UMzimkulu River in two- or four-person rafts that are designed for fun. As you meander down the waterway, look out for the gorgeous birds that live in the vegetation around the water, or the animals that survive from its banks. The birds include the white-breasted cormorant, African spoonbill, several ducks and ibises, the bearded vulture, Verreaux's eagle, blue crane, Cape parrot, various owl species, and so many more. These make for lovely photographs and memorable sightings.

After a full safety briefing and a rundown on how to use the life jackets and helmets, you will be taken up the river for launch into the water. Choose between two river tour options – one six kilometre route and the other a 12 kilometre one. The time it takes to complete either of these depends much on the amount of the water in the river, and on how long you spend exploring the banks and swimming in the warm waters. After your rafting and tubing fun, you will be collected again and taken back to the central point.

The most rewarding times in which to navigate the river are in the early morning and the late afternoon. At these times, the weather is more temperate and the animals are more active (as opposed to during the heat of the day).

Pennygum Rafting and Tubing is open from 08h30 to 16h50 during the summer months. It is fully registered with the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.
