About Porcupine Quill Brewing Company
When you visit the Porcupine Quill Brewing Company, you will be drinking far more than great South African craft beers. Situated in the Valley of 1 000 Hills, just outside Durban, you are sure to drink in some magnificent views of the province of KwaZulu-Natal and its gorgeous landscapes too, which include vistas of the Southern Drakensberg mountains. This creates a setting that is nothing short of perfect in which to enjoy an ale or sip on a bitter.
The Quills beers are characterised by the flavoursome dance that they perform on the tongue, and the aroma of hops that twirl languidly up each nostril. At present, there are 11 beers under the Quills label, each of which is bottled in dark bottles to extend their shelf lives. These 11 are spread across three different labels – Porcupine Quill (Karoo Red, Kalahari Gold, Namaqua Blond, Black Dog Bitter and Flat Tail Ale), Dam Wolf (this is a more adventurous range and comprises Yellow Eyes, Howl & Cry, and Wolf in Sheep's Clothing), and African Moon (Impala Light, Amber Ale, and Black Buck Bitter).
These beers are available at some exclusive outlets around the province, but are best enjoyed at the brewery's restaurant itself. They are also available for purchase at the deli. This deli showcases the beers, but also stocks a range of cheeses, baked delights, and sausages. These are all made by the deli, guaranteeing freshness and unique flavours and influences. The smoke house also produces fabulous cold-smoked meat and fish.
The brewery includes a milling machine from Germany, a hot liquor tank that has a capacity of 1 200 litres, a mash tun (900 litre capacity), automatic underback and valentine, heat exchanger, a massive kettle, cold liquor tank, three fermentation tanks (of 1 000 litres each), and a beer aging room (where newly bottled beers wait for three weeks before being stored).
Immerse yourself in the creativity of the craft beer industry while appreciating the splendour of this magnificent country at Porcupine Quill Brewing Company.
