About Pumula Beach
About 100 kilometres from the bustling metropolis of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal is the tranquil Pumula Beach. Here, the sound of traffic, the glitz of city life, and the non-stop pace of the real world all fade into a very distant background as visitors get to enjoy the pristine natural beauty that is the South Coast of South Africa.
Pumula Beach is home to loads of rock pools, each of which is a little treasure trove of marine animals and exciting discoveries (particularly for curios little ones). These may include busy crabs, colourful anemones, a comical cucumber, starfish of various sizes, or tiny fish that dart out from under the rocks to grab a bite to eat.
The warm waters of the Indian Ocean are inviting for swimmers, surfers, stand-up paddlers, and those wanting to head into the blue with a snorkel and goggles to see what lives beneath the surface. The marine life is also irresistible to fishermen, who enjoy standing on the sandy shores or the rocky outcrops and casting their lines. They may catch Garrick, kob, shad, bronze bream, or kingfish. Lifeguards are on duty to ensure that swimmers can enjoy splashing in the waves with a watchful eye over them.
The beach itself is inviting for long, romantic walks, a brisk jog, sunbathing, beach games, or building the ultimate sand castle.
From Pumula Beach, it takes just over an hour to get to Durban, which is home to an internal airport, called the King Shaka. Pumula is a seaside village that retains its somewhat magical sense of wildness. Still, it is well-equipped with shops and restaurants, and all of the necessary amenities for visitors from all over South African and the world.
