About Umkobi Beach

Umkobi Beach is one of the coastal jewels of Southbroom, a gorgeous holiday town along the shores of the KwaZulu-Natal Province. It is about the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the white sands of the south coast, and the balmy weather that this part of South Africa is known for almost all year round.

The beach enjoys the services of lifeguards during the holiday season (from around December to February), over school holidays, and on public holidays. There is plenty of parking, as well as ablutions and a kiosk to ensure that visitors can spend all day lazing on the warm sands or swimming in the temperate waters of the ocean. The shark nets also make for safer swimming conditions at Umkobi Beach.

The inviting waters are popular for swimming, surfing, body-boarding, stand-up paddling, hydrofoiling, and snorkelling. Keen anglers can also stand on the shore and try their hand at landing a good catch. Even an unsuccessful fishing day at Umkobi is well worth the sea spray and sunshine.

The dense coastal vegetation not only makes for spectacular backdrops, but is also the preferred home of many animal species. The bird life here includes egrets, ducks, gallinules, moorhens and dikkops. Look out for the water mongoose too, which loves to play amongst the reeds of the lagoon. This is an ideal spot for long walks and exploration.

The Trattoria La Terrazza restaurant is perfectly situated so that diners can enjoy views of the scenic lagoon while indulging in delicious cuisine.

Southbroom is close to Margate, Shelly Beach and Ramsgate. Durban and the King Shaka International Airport are just over 90 minutes away.
