For a rugged terrain that is sure to test your outdoor survival skills, the Shingwedzi 4x4 Trail promises visitors an excellent African safari adventure. This trail is nestled within the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park and spans some 250 kilometres. As such, it takes around 100 hours to complete, and is only available as a guided trail (that is, no visitors are permitted to do the trail independently of an experienced, qualified guide).

Shingwedzi is a one-way trail that commences at the Pafuri Picnic Site, continues along the length of the Luvuvhu River and ends at the Letaba Rest Camp. It is an eco-trail that showcases some of the finest African landscapes, fauna and flora; all from the comfort and adventure of your vehicle.

Those embarking on the Shingwedzi 4x4 Trail are required to be completely self-sufficient along the entire course. There are very basic ablutions available, as well as potable water on the first and third nights. Otherwise, no provisions are made and no facilities available.

The terrain is made up of wilderness tracks and some river crossings, making the days spent in the vehicle exciting, even relatively challenging in places. There are not major obstacles, though. In the summer, temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Drivers are warned to exercise caution during this time and to take the precautions necessary.

Thanks to its prime position, the Shingwedzi 4x4 Trail offers plenty in the way of plant and animal life. There is an abundance of different bird species, including the majestic fish eagle. In addition, drivers should look out for the mighty hippo as it relaxes in the river waters.
