Set in the heart of the Hanglipberg region of the Waterberg Mountains on a farm close to Naboomspruit, Skeurkrans is three circular trails that combine to make a weekend hike in one of the most beautiful parts of the area.

Think: majestic mountains, grass clad hills, deep valleys, rugged terrain, rock pools and views.

The three day hikes all leave from base camp – a number of A-frame wooden huts in amongst the trees and rocks with bunk beds, mattresses, a lapa with cooking facilities and accompanying flush toilets, showers and basins. A donkey boiler provides hot water.

Each of the three trails is circular and they are 13 km, 9 km and 5.5 km respectively. Combining the 9 km and 5.5 km makes for a good weekend hike.

The Skeurkrans is a beautiful area and the views from the top are incredible.

The Waterberg really comes into its own during the rainy season (October to March) when it becomes both lush and full of flowers, although if you want to spot animals, it is best to go when it is dry (April to September).

The largest colony of endangered Cape vultures have settled in the mountains of the Waterberg Biosphere, so take along a pair of binoculars, and there are also a number of mountain bike tracks in the mountains.
