The Alkmaar 4x4 Trail is a relatively easy-going route that takes drivers through some of the prettiness of the Lowveld in the South African province of Mpumalanga. (While it is relatively easy going for a 4wd trail it does require low gear and a little bit of clearance. People should not mistake it for a scenic drive down a dirt road).

With its mostly gravel terrain, it is manageable for most drivers, even those just starting to explore the world of 4x4-ing. There are also rocky faces and river crossings to provide some adrenalin-inducing moments. However, when the rains come, the muddiness adds to the adventure and challenge significantly. It is seven kilometres long and takes between two and three hours to complete. In addition to traversing the orchards, the route also takes drivers up various climbs and to stunning lookout points, from where the natural splendour of South Africa can be savoured.

The Alkmaar 4x4 Trail is situated on the farm of the same name, which is a working farm that produces macadamia nuts and citrus fruits. This farm is only a few minutes’ from Nelspruit and 16 kilometres from Mbombela. It is also close to a number of Mpumalanga’s most beautiful and popular attractions. These include Sudwala Caves, Pilgrims Rest, Blyde River Canyon and the internationally acclaimed Kruger National Park.

Because it is a relatively easy-going 4x4 trail, no guide is necessary and it can be tackled at any time of year. The rainy season does present a more challenging route, though.

For those wanting more of a dare, there is an obstacle course at the Alkmaar Farm, as well as a training facility for those wanting to learn more.

Alkmaar Farm caters to the many visitors and their families by providing additional activities and attractions. There are walking and hiking trails nearby, as well as excellent mountain biking trails. Those who have a particular interest in wildlife will enjoy the game viewing opportunities and should look out for some of the many recorded bird species in the region. Fishing and kayaking are also popular pastimes for those visiting Alkmaar.
