The scenic province of Mpumalanga is one of South Africa's gems, known for its balmy climate and its abundance of plant and animal species. This natural splendour can be enjoyed in many ways. Embarking on a 4x4 trail through the countryside gives visitors the opportunity to explore the prettiness while combining sightseeing with a little adrenalin.

The Buffalo Gorge 4x4 Trail is located 36 kilometres from Middelburg. However, it is still conveniently situated close to Johannesburg and the neighbouring city of Pretoria. This, naturally, means that it is also situated close to the OR Tambo International Airport.

This trail extends for some 18 kilometres, and takes about four hours to complete, depending on the skills of the driver and the chosen pace. It is a circular route with an option to stop halfway. There is also a section that is suitable for 4 x 2 or soft-roader vehicles. The Buffalo Gorge 4x4 Trail is suitable for tackling all year round, but the rainier seasons do add to the challenge.

This part of Mpumalanga is characterised by its grassy slopes, river crossings, tricky dongas, and steep climbs and drops. There are muddy sections too, which add to the challenge and fun, and fewer than 16 river crossings, some of which can be fairly tough. It is manageable without the aid of a qualified guide and makes for a fantastic day out for friends. In addition, on-site 4x4 training can be arranged prior to the time. Buffalo Gorge boasts an obstacle course for those wanting to test their skills.
