If a weekend of hiking, camping and mountain biking is your idea of a weekend well spent, then the Grey Rhebok Hiking Trail, a relatively new hiking trail in Mpumalanga, is well worth exploring.

The camp, from which the hike begins, lies in a valley surrounded by mountains. The trails, each named after a colour, allow you to explore the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Expect cycads, proteas, three waterfalls, a pom-pom forest, rare tree orchids, tree ferns, grey rhebok (seldom seen), a huge range of birds and clear water pools.

The 2km Pink Trail is a gentle walk past a stream lined with tree ferns to a waterfall.

The 4km Yellow Trail is up the mountain side to yet another waterfall.

The 6km Orange Trail heads up a number of hillsides before plunging into a gorge for a series of boulder hopping, particularly just after the rains. The waterfall at the end of the hike is worth the effort.

The 7km Red Trail is a steep hike up the mountainside to the boundary of the farm after which it heads down into a beautiful kloof littered with tree ferns. This is but a brief breather before heading up along the escarpment. Downhill is relatively easy, back to camp.

The 10 km White Trail is a steep hike up to the far reaches of the farm past tree ferns and through an indigenous forest filled with stream and ouhout trees littered with old man's beard and orchids.
