In the heart of the Highlands Meander, showcasing some of the most beautiful views in Mpumalanga, is The Seedlings Restaurant, part of Old Joe's Kaia. This is a vegan eatery that caters to those staying at Old Joe's as well as to visitors that want to sample the delicious meals and friendly service. In their words, this is “soul food for the dreamers of a better world”.

The Seedling's menu has plenty of variety for hungry travellers and peckish visitors. The breakfast menu includes a polenta flapjack with linseed and herbs, spinach and potato rosti, baby marrow and mushrooms, fried banana, and scrambled tofu. These are served with muffins and condiments that make each mouthful even more of a culinary delight.

The lunch menu is wonderfully varied. Some of the choices include chilli bites, beetroot falafel with croutons, a trio of springrolls, caramelised apple and almond tepeh tempura, quinoa burger, and pasta with cinnamon butternut and chilli. These are healthy, filling and moreish; allowing diners to get the most out of their meal without compromising on nurturing and nourishing their bodies. There is an outdoor eating area for the summer and an indoor one (complete with a roaring fire) for the winter.

The indigenous labyrinth is inviting and beautiful to explore, revealing a different side of the local flora and splendour.

Veganism is a way of eating that excludes all animal products. Therefore, no meat, eggs or dairy are served here. Rather, natural replacements are used. These are not only delicious, but also have a far softer effect on the environment. This is also a healthier way of eating, in many respects, and has the health and well-being of animals as a priority. The Seedlings aims to open the minds of diners to the variety and taste that is available in plant-based products.

It is situated in Schoemanskloof, which is just over half an hour's drive from Nelspruit, and less than three hours from Johannesburg.
