The Northern Cape is home to a number of 4x4 trails, thanks to its varied topography and rugged landscapes. The local vegetation is somewhat sparse for most of the year but, come spring, the countryside bursts out into wild, colourful flowers that delight all of the senses. Even its arid seasons and meagre bushveld are spectacular in their own, unique way. It is within these breath-taking surrounds that the Strandveld 4x4 Trail can be found.

This route is a circular one that extends for some 27 kilometres. With a grading of between two and three, it takes between four and six hours to complete, and always needs to be undertaken with the help of one of the guides. The Strandveld 4x4 Trail comprises two dune trails and is characterised by plenty of sand and dunes, as well as gravel roads. This terrain makes for a great challenge for pros and the not-so-experienced alike. Booking in advance is essential. This part of the Diamond Coast is privately owned and protected, with archaeological and fossil treasures that make this adventure even more exciting and memorable. Groups of at least eight people are required to secure your booking.

Along the way, drivers should look out for different antelope species; including gemsbok and springbok. There are also ostrich, smaller antelope and an array of bird species in the 30 000 hectares of the protected area. Thanks to the vast expanse of coastline, visitors are also invited to indulge in swimming, surfing, angling in the surf, and walking along the beaches. Bird watching and golf are other popular activities for locals and those visiting Strandveld.
