About Bergsig Wine Estate
Within the Breed River Valley where the Drakenstein and Hex River Mountains meet lies the Bergsig Estate. The name means ‘mountain view' and within these mountain slopes, the soil and climate provides the perfect place for red and white grape varieties to flourish.
Willem Lategan planted the first vines in 1843 and his family has been running the farm for six generations after him. His three sons, De Wet, Plum and Louis have taken over form their father and assume the positions of winemaker and vineyard and farming operations respectively. De Wet is the 6th generation winemaker was awarded the Breedekloof / Worcester Winemaker of the year in 2005 and 2007 after studying Oenology and Viticulture. He strives to produce wine as naturally and simply as possible utilising eco-friendly viticultural practices. The family commits to setting land aside to conserve Fynbos, fauna and flora.
Most of their vineyards are younger than 20 years old and the Pinotage and Tinta Barocca amongst the oldest and nearly 30 years old. The flavour of the white wines is captured by cold fermentation in Portuguese-style open fermenters for ports whilst the Chardonnay and reds go into French barrels.
