About Buffelspoort Rubicon 4x4 Trail
One of the wonderful gems of the Western Cape Province of South Africa is Buffelspoort. This is a pristine wilderness area that is also a formal Natural Heritage site, thanks to its abundance and beauty. The trail is less than 40 kilometres from Laingsburg, which is a small town in the Groot Karoo.
The Buffelspoort Rubicon 4x4 Trail is only 12 kilometres long, but takes between six and eight hours to complete, thanks to the very challenging terrain that consists of mud, water, rocks and sand.
It has a grading of three to four and is a strictly guided route, meaning that drivers may not tackle it without the aid of one of the experienced, trained guides. This is for the safety of the drivers and their passengers, as well as for the sake of getting the most out of this challenging trail. There are a number of stunning mountain passes, which make for breath-taking routes and memorable vistas.
The Buffelspoort Rubicon 4x4 Trail is open all year round. However, flash floods sometimes occur in the summer months (December to February) and drivers are cautioned to be aware of this danger if they plan to visit over this time. All through the year, though, drivers should be willing to tackle plenty of water and mud with patience and a spirit of adventure. There are dangers of your vehicle getting flooded, and it is almost certain of having to endure a number of scratches. Those wanting to tackle it need to bring good boots and a two-way radio along.
Drivers and passengers should look out for some of the many different bird species, as well as land mammals, reptiles, and even the elusive leopard. The topography of the Western Cape is absolutely exquisite and promises stunning backdrops to your Buffelspoort excursion.
