Along the world-renowned route called the R62, deep in the heart of the Klein Karoo, there lies a world of history, heritage, culture, and fine wines and ports. Calitzdorp is a small South African town, but is abundant in stunning natural vistas, historical attractions and fun activities. One of the primary testimonies to its heritage is the Calitzdorp Museum, which occupies what was once the Standard Bank building.

This museum, situated in Van Riebeeck Street, is about showcasing the cultural history of the region and its immediate surrounds. It explores the life, implements, people and natural treasures of Calitzdorp and the Klein Karoo, extending back generations. The exhibit is varied and comprehensive, and ranges from old photographs to local artefacts.

The Calitzdorp Museum is run by volunteers who share a love for the local heritage and natural abundance, and want others to enjoy this passion. It is open from Monday to Sunday, 09h00 to 16h00, and is closed between 13h00 and 14h00.

Visitors to the museum should also consider visiting the nearby wine farms, which produce some of the best known and loved wines and ports in South Africa. In fact, some of these labels are exported all over the world; popular for their intense and unique flavours and quality. Local architecture is also wonderful to see, and represents Edwardian and Victorian styles.

Calitzdorp is small and relatively quiet, but certainly has plenty to see and do for locals and visitors.
