Between Laingsburg and Touws River you'll find the Witteberg Private Nature Reserve and in that the Diep en Deur 4x4 trail which is a bundle of fun.

This 15km trail is only one of four in the reserve and at the halfway point you'll find wonderful views of the Matroosberg peak. You'll need a vehicle with 4x4 capabilites, low range and high clearance because this trail takes between four and five hours to complete with a difficulty grading of three.

All of the trails intersect with one another at some point and they were originally constructed in order to pick flowers. After signing an indemnity form you'll receive an info booklet which includes a map of the trail.

The Diep en Deur trail is the longest in the reserve and is very well maintained. Expect shale and sandstone tracks and an immediate series of steeps ascents and decents. You'll head past a few lookout spots, along a cliff edge and navigate your way around two tight hairpins. Have fun when you head through the water course before another steep ascent. Following on from this is another descent followed by the exit which you should prepare yourself for because it is both long and extremely steep with large rocks. Be careful not to lose traction.

At this point you've reached the halfway point which is 1370m above sea level.
You'll then make your way through the second half of the course which has both gentle turns and hairpin bends before you reach the end of the trail. Have fun and remember to stick to the trail!
