About Elands Bay Cave

Booking accommodation in Elands Bay is like buying a ticket to the ultimate “chill zone”. This little town is only about 2.5 hours' drive from Cape Town and is known for its awesome surfing, fishing and diving. It is part of the Cape West Coast, where charming little fishing villages and the freshest seafood are all part of the daily vibe. But, it is also the home of the Elands Bay Cave, where the mysterious world of yesteryear can be glimpsed at in a series of beautiful cave paintings.

Elands Bay Cave was declared a provincial heritage site in 2009, thanks to its being the only site in the area that has such a rich collection of resources that speak of the South African heritage. But, more than the rock paintings, the views from the cave are exquisite. The mountain tumbles into the Atlantic Ocean in dramatic silence, testifying to the sheer power and magnitude of water and earth.

The paintings in the cave were left there by the ancient San folk, who were hunter-gatherers that lived in tribes. They had an intricate understanding of the land, its plants, and its animals. They developed unique ways of hunting, preparing meat, making clothing, and using plants as medicine. As such, they are still fascinating to learn about; even if only to see their primitive art forms on the rocky faces of the mountains. Look out for the tiny hand prints and the portrayal of human figures too.

The Elands Bay Cave is situated near the Verlorenvlei Estuary's mouth and is nestled above Baboon Point; which is, in turn, above the Elands Bay Beach. In summer, snakes may be sunning themselves in the area, so always wear closed shoes and watch where you're walking.

After exploring the cave, head to the beach for some world-class fishing or a long walk. On hot days, the best place to be is in the water – snorkelling, swimming or surfing the waves.
