The theory behind the Galileo Open Air Cinema is simple – a magical outdoor movie experience that is glitzy, star-studded and ultimately romantic. The Hillcrest Quarry is in the Durbanville Wine Valley, and promises a gorgeous venue with spectacular views. Hillcrest Quarry is also the idyllic venue for one of the Galileo Open Air Cinemas that pepper the Cape Town social scene, and a popular spot amongst locals looking for a night out with a difference.

Surrounded by mountains, manicured gardens and a huge lake, visitors can look forward to a great movie that starts at sunset, a ceiling of stars, fabulous food and drinks at the market, music, and even games. Of course, the movie is the highlight. Currently, there are more than 100 movies on the Galileo line-up; ranging from classics and comedies to modern musicals and documentaries.

Hillcrest Quarry is the Tuesday venue for these shows from November to April, while the beautiful summer evenings put on a special show of their own. Tickets can be purchased on the website. Optional extras to a standard ticket include a blanket, backrest, or the full spread plus snacks (like popcorn and sweets) and an ice-cold Savanna, which can be enjoyed in premium seats.

No other alcohol is permitted. The doors open at 18h00, and the first-comers secure themselves the best seats. While guests wait for the movie to start, artisanal goodies can be found and purchased at the quirky market, or they can simply enjoy a stroll amongst the stalls.
