The Karoo has a quiet, unassuming quality that belies the immensity of its beauty and variety. The landscapes are sometimes arid, sometimes scrubby, but always offer endless vistas of natural delights. This part of the Western Cape Province of South Africa is situated inland, making it drier and less densely vegetated than the more lush coastal regions. These make for ideal conditions in which to test your 4x4 vehicle and venture out onto rugged tracks through the veld while enjoying the unspoilt countryside.

The Gecko Rock Seattle 4x4 Trail is a nine kilometre one-way route that takes between two and three hours to complete. It links up with an access road, which leads to the beautiful Echo Valley Camp, as well as to other trails. The terrain includes sand, gravel and rocks with plenty of steep climbs and descents, as well as sandstone ridges and pole bridges. There are tight corners, rocky outcrops and other challenging surprises.

These exciting obstacles have earned it a grading of between two and four, depending on the part being tackled. These routes are guided. If more experienced drivers have their own guide that they would prefer to use, they are welcome to do so.

Because of extreme summer temperatures and conditions, the Gecko Rock Seattle 4x4 Trail is best visited during the more temperate time between April and October. Along the way, drivers and their passengers can keep an eye out for an abundance of wildlife species.

These may include the African wild cat, caracal, klipspringer, aardvark, springbok and an array of exquisite bird species. For those that want to spend some time here and appreciate what the South African Karoo has to offer, they can also try mountain biking, star gazing, hiking, climbing, and formal flower tours.
