About Genadendal Hiking Trail
Start: Genadendal Moravian Mission Church
Finish: Genadendal Moravian Mission Church
Duration: 25.3 km, 2 days
Fitness: fairly strenuous
Our tip: take plenty of water with you during summer as it can get very hot
This beautiful circular hike wends its way through the Riviersonderend Conservation Area, 70 000 hectares of rugged and mountainous terrain. You will hike alongside rivers, through forested kloofs, through gorges, and up high peaks.
It is fairly strenuous and for the more adventurous hiker.
Day one
14.3 km leaves the mission church and heads past two pools at Groot and Klein Koffiegat (Groot Koffiegat is a good half day stopping point), ending on the north side of the mountain at the farm Die Hoek where there is overnight accommodation in the form of dorm huts, kitchen, and hot showers. Watch out for the low doorways.
Highlights include: beautiful views out over the village and the mountains, Wonderklippe – a group of interesting rocks, the waterfall at Klein Koffiegat, and a swim at Groot Koffiegat.
Day two
11km returns to Genadendal via the highest point of the two days before dropping into a ravine and then heading back to the church.
Hikers can arrange to stay at accommodation in Greyton for the night before the hike starts (Arrange accommodation separately). Contact Cape Nature to book the hike.
Die Hoek's farmer sells drinks, meat and milk should the need arise, but check ahead.
Genadendal and its mission museum are without doubt worth a visit in their own right. Leave time after the hike, or arrive early. The Old Print Shop has one of the oldest mission printing presses in the country and the Water Mill bakes its own bread.
