The Klein Karoo in the Western Cape of South Africa holds a magnificence that is not a little challenging to put into words. Just north of the historical town of Calitzdorp is the Saint Helena Farm, the home base for horse trekking tours conducted by the Gamka River Safari Co.

Horse rides are conducted on a daily basis, and overnight horse safaris are a feature that those with a passion for these powerful animals are invited to snatch up. This whole area is surrounded by dramatic mountain ranges, including the Rooiberge and the Swartberg Range. These are exquisite, and exploring them is always a memorable treat. But, to see the landscape, smell the scrubby bush, taste the crisp air and hear the call of the birds from the back of a well-trained, responsive horse really is quite unforgettable.

Saint Helena Farm is situated in the foothills of the Rooiberge, and is surrounded by healthy vines that yield delicious grapes. The horses are allowed to roam free in this safe environment, galloping and grazing at will.

The Vineyard Trail is a four-hour trail that includes a tasting of some delicious South African wine varieties. The three-hour option is of the farm and surrounds, and ensures that you get to experience the splendour of this area to the full. The Deluxe Karuza Trail is particularly special. It takes five days (four nights) and includes accommodation, food and refreshments. Sharing these adventures with friends and family is amazing, but they work well as team building initiatives too.
