From the little coastal town of Hout Bay in Cape Town, fantastic fishing charter adventures can be enjoyed with Wild Ocean Fishing Charters. The owner and skipper boasts extensive fishing experience, as well as all of the necessary courses and licenses to ensure that anglers heading out on one of his adventures is assured of safety and plenty of fun.

The boats are checked annually by the South African Maritime Safety Association (SAMSA) to ensure their safety and seaworthiness. These boats are smaller than the usual commercial charters. This is an added advantage in that those heading out on deep-sea fishing excursions have more opportunities to get “the big one”, not facing even more competition than the small team on the boat.

The inshore yellowtail charter takes anglers from Hout Bay to the waters of False Bay and Cape Point in the summer and to those around Robben Island in the winter. All of these sites promise breath-taking views, but seeing Table Mountain from Robben Island is spectacular. And it is here that fantastic yellowtail fishing awaits.

Light tackle and spinning is used for some really exciting fishing, made challenging because yellowtail are renowned for their fighting abilities, and they refuse to be nabbed without a good struggle. Once they have been hooked, they head straight to the ocean floor, pulling hard on the line and forcing you to act quickly and without hesitation. This is fun for experienced fishermen as well as for newbies and even youngsters. Metal spinners and plastic lures are the choice instruments because these make for a more visual experience, as the fish come to the surface to grab the spinner or lure.

On these excursions, anglers can also try their hand at catching Cape snoek, slender tuna and Atlantic bonito. While on the water, look out for penguins, seals, oceanic sunfish, and dolphins. Between July and December, some whales may even make their appearance.

The half-day inshore yellowtail charter is for between one and four fishermen and takes between five and six hours. Snacks and refreshments are provided.
