About Kopbeenskloof 4x4 Trail
In the starkness of the Karoo, a truly unique beauty is found. It is an unusual, mysterious allure that has had a profound effect on those that visit this part of the Western Cape of South Africa; and continues to be a major draw card to the area, particularly for those with a love for all things adventurous.
The Kopbeenskloof 4x4 Trail is within the midst of this setting and is open to drivers all year round. It comprises a circular section and a return route. No formal guide is needed, but there are parts of the route that have a grading of up to four, making them challenging. As a whole, the Kopbeenskloof Trail is 36 kilometres long with a grading of between two and four. As such, it usually takes drivers between five and seven hours to complete. The terrain comprises rocks, gravel and sand, with some tricky dongas and deep river crossings to negotiate along the way.
The circular loop is easier to tackle than the return route, while still promising some gorgeous views of the Karoo. The return route has a fantastically scary descent into Skull Gorge, and is sure to test the nerves and abilities of the drivers and their vehicles. This route also ends with stunning panoramic views of the landscape.
Because the Kopbeenskloof 4x4 Trail is situated between the rugged mountains of Krakkadouw and Waboom, it is the ideal spot for those who have a longing to explore the untouched splendour of Africa. There is an abundance of plant and animal life, which includes antelope and even predators like the leopard and caracal. The birdlife is spectacular and avian enthusiasts are reminded to bring their binoculars and identification books along. In addition, this setting is ideal for other outdoor activities; like hiking, walking, cycling, or fishing in the farm dam.
