The Western Cape is a particularly scenic province in South Africa, and brims with activities, sights and sounds all year round. Heading out into the countryside in the 4x4 is the perfect way to combine exciting challenges with an unhindered appreciation for all things beautiful.

The Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve 4x4 Trail is a 30 kilometre route that does not require a guide. It is made up of solid rock face as well as a variety of loose rocks, sand and mountainous areas. Its various terrains are graded between two and six, and it takes about six hours to tackle its full extent.

The actual trail is made up of a number of return and circular options, giving drivers more control regarding the level of difficulty and the time they choose. Two of the routes are for 4x4 vehicles, and another is suitable for a 4 x 2 vehicle. There is also an obstacle course to encourage those wanting to test and improve their skills to do so.

The nature reserve and its 4x4 trail are open all year round. However, the winter months invariably see snow on the mountains, which adds to the adventure as well as the sheer beauty of the region. Of course, it also makes the route wetter, more slippery and more challenging. The views from the various parts of the trails are nothing short of awe-inspiring, guaranteeing excellent photo opportunities and even better memories.

The entire reserve covers more than 1 000 hectares of the Western Cape, and includes some very impressive mountain peaks. Other activities in the immediate vicinity of the 4x4 routes include horse riding, mountain climbing, hiking, ice climbing, quad biking, snowboarding and kloofing.
