Thousands of years ago, traders began to use shells as currency because they were so beautiful, intricate and, for some, rare. Although we've moved on in terms of currency, the natural inclination is to search for and collect shells. Even children will happily spend hours scouring the beaches, comparing the colours and patterns, and deciding on which of the beautiful treasures to keep.

The Cape West Coast of South Africa is wild and rugged, and has a huge variety of marine animals in its waters and on its long, unspoilt beaches. And it is the abundance of these white shores that is celebrated at Neptune's Cave, an awesome little shell shop in Langebaan.

This small town is known for the kite surfing community, and is a hotspot for lessons. But, more than this, it is home to some fantastic little shops, not least of all the famous Neptune's Cave.

The simple exterior belies the treasure trove within. This shop is absolutely brimming with sea shells, sea animals, and the products made from these. Stuffed blowfish and funny characters made entirely out of shells, beautiful jewellery, cutlery, coasters, and dream catchers are all fantastic gifts.

Or, invest in an exquisite nautilus shell with incredible markings, or a pansy shell bigger than your hand. There are colourful starfish and gorgeous shell-encrusted handbags too. This is a real spoil.

Neptune's Cave Shell Shop is just metres from the beach, and has plenty of on-street parking outside. It is surrounded by surf and kite surfing shops, as well as a number of restaurants (the local seafood is a must!)

Langebaan is less than two hours' drive from the city centre of Cape Town and half an hour from the scenic coastal village of Paternoster.
