About Pieter Cruythoff Route Trail
Start: stile to the north of the memorial on Bothmanskloof Pass
Finish: back where you started
Duration: 2, 3 hours
Fitness: moderate
Our tip: you should have permission from Meerhof farm to do this hike
This route is named after Pieter Cruythoff - the leader of a group sent inland to explore the region by the then commander of the Cape, Jan van Riebeeck. Hence the naming of the mountain in van Riebeeck's honour (Riebeeck's Casteel).
There is a parking area on Bothmanskloof Pass where you will find a memorial in memory of this christening event. Just to the north of this is the stile from which you start the upward trail.
Look out for a white footprint on a rock, and from there the route is clearly marked. On the summit, the views are excellent. You head back down again using the same route.
Or you may continue into Kasteelberg Nature Reserve (just beyond Aasvoëlkop) without a permit, provided you have experience rambling as there are no marked paths.
Note:
The Pieter Cruythoff Route and Carl Thunberg Route are two hikes that are relatively new to the Riebeek Valley. What makes them so attractive is their proximity to Cape Town and their brevity – both are short, but steep slogs up Kasteelberg.
