Hermanus is famous for its tranquil “seaside village” feel and it is one of the loveliest retreats to enjoy gorgeous beaches and lazy summer days. It is also famous for the whales that can often be seen here every year between July and December. It is in this idyllic getaway that Sandbaai Beach can be found.

Sandbaai is great for families. There is loads of space for little ones to run around, build sandcastles, or play Frisbee. The water can get chilly in the Western Cape, but children and other keen swimmers hardly feel it, and love splashing around in the waves. There is plenty of kelp and some rocky patches too, so swimmers should watch out for these. The warm sands are great for sunbathing, picnics and collecting shells, making Sandbaai fantastic for the whole family.

Keen anglers love standing on the sand or the rocks and trying their hand at catching something exciting. The rocks also mean plenty of rock pools, which make for fun swimming and snorkelling. The waves are popular for surfers, and are also fun to body board and hydrofoil.

Because Sandbaai Beach remains quiet all year round, it is a tranquil spot to stroll, relax, and enjoy at leisure with friends. Life guards are on duty during the summer.

There is a paved path to Onrus Beach, which is another wonderland to explore. Sandbaai Beach has convenient ablutions for families and friends that are enjoying a day on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean (it is a good idea to bring your own toilet roll, just in case). There is a parking lot here, which is gravelly. So, visitors are reminded to bring a pair of shoes along.

Hungry swimmers that have worked up an appetite on the sands of the beach can find restaurants nearby, in the heart of Hermanus. Sandbaai Beach is about an hour away from Cape Town.
