About Tierkloof 4x4 Trail
Less than 100 kilometres from Cape Town, which is the capital city and tourist hub of the Western Cape Province, the small wine growing community of Rawsonville can be found. This is nestled within the Breede River Valley of South Africa, where the natural beauty and abundance continues almost unrivalled. Just ten kilometres from Rawsonville is the Tierkloof 4x4 Trail.
This route is a circular one that offers some escape options at particularly challenging spots. It is a 12 kilometre trail with a grading of three to four, and usually takes drivers between two and four hours to complete (depending on their personal skills and the abilities of their vehicles).
There are some steep climbs along tricky terrain that comprises sand, loose rocks and rocky steps. At the highest point of the trail, Bloukop, there are stunning views of the Western Cape winelands and the beautiful expanses of the Brandvlei Dam. Some of the best obstacles of the Tierkloof 4x4 Trail are found in the soft sand on the return part of the route, and include a steep climb in this soft terrain.
This entire area is rich in fauna and flora, and is a favoured hotspot amongst nature enthusiasts and those who love being outdoors. In addition to tackling the 4x4 route, visitors are encouraged to go canoeing, fishing, windsurfing, kayaking or swimming in the Brandvlei Dam; or to head out into the countryside on foot or mountain bike. Thanks to the wonderful variety of wines coming out of the region, there are also plenty of spots to sample fine dining paired with the perfect wine.
