About Tukulu Wines
Tukulu wine was launched in 1999 and gets its name from the deep red Tukulu soils where the magic happens and these grapes are grown. It is one of South Africa's first empowerment labels and the business has been structured to become full-black owned.
Tuhlua is jointly-owned by Distell, a group of black entrepreneurs and a community trust representing the farm workers and local Mamre community. Grapes are sources from Papkuilsfontein in Darling. This range has received attention as a past Winner of the Wine Magazine Pinotage Challenge, Veritas double-gold winner and one of ABSA's Top ten winners.
The ten hectares of Chardonnay has been farmed organically since 2001. These Papkuilsfontein vineyards have cool breezes from the sea, protection from the South Easter and above-average rainfall. The red soils have great water retention properties which viticulturist Graham Daniels uses to his advantage. Their Chardonnay is wood-fermented and is rich and creamy with a fresh acidity. This wine is superb with creamy chicken and seafood dishes.
Tukulu is one of the first wines to display the Ethical seal. These five wines from their range include its 2009 Unwooded Syrah, 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009 and 2010 Pinotage, 2011 Organic Chardonnay and 2012 Chenin Blanc. This seal confirms that fair labour practice is followed by producers.
