Standing tall with breathtaking views of the Klein Drakenstein Mountain Range and in some of the most sought after wine estate in South Africa, in northern Paarl, is Veenwouden Private Cellar, a boutique winery established in 1988. Veenwouden was named after a small hamlet in Friesland, Netherlands – the village that the first Van der Walt to land on South Africa's shores came from.

The vineyards, first planted in 1989 are comprised of Merlot (7.4ha), Cabernet Sauvignon (3.55ha), Cabernet Franc (0.8ha) and Malbec (0.25ha). They are all contained within the valley and lay on gentle, north-easterly facing, slopes in the direction of the Berg River. During the long and hot summers come cool afternoon breezes from the Atlantic Ocean, some 60km away, creating a climate similar to that of the Mediterranean.

The cellar itself has been based on the functionality of the smaller Pomerol and St. Emilion Chateaux and is a fascinating blend of architecture from Tuscany, Provence and, of course, The Cape. Production has been limited to 5 tons per hectare to ensure premium quality; grapes are handpicked and transported in small, 10kg boxes, to the cellar.
