First class mountain bike trails are plentiful in and around Pietermaritzburg. The start of the Comrades Marathon and the Umashova is only 2km away and the start of the Duzi Canoe Marathon is a short 5 minute drive away.

The famous Midlands Meander arts and crafts route, which includes numerous and varied country restaurants, is easy to access in the vicinity of Midmar Dam and the nearby village of Howick. A short drive from Howick is the birders paradise of Karkloof, which also features the acclaimed Karkloof Canopy Tour.
