Hillston Farm is a highly recommended guest house with self catering option, providing accommodation in Middelburg for anyone visiting the Karoo Heartland region.
We invite you to experience true escape at Hillston Farm, a place of quiet beauty and glorious views. Experience genuine, warm Karoo hospitality with a difference.
Hillston Farm is a Karoo farm providing accommodation either in a quaint ironstone cottage, built in the late 1800's or in our remote country house. Meals are served in the farmhouse dining room or al fresco in the expansive garden. You can also do your own cooking in your fully equipped kitchen or enjoy a braai in the lapa or outside. Ample parking is available and there is a laundry service available on request.
The Cottage:
The cottage has three bedrooms, a bathroom with bath and shower and separate toilet. All six beds have woolen duvets, electric blankets and luxurious bath sheets. There is an open plan kitchen, dining room and family lounge with under-floor heating. The kitchen is fully equipped for self - catering with stove, microwave, kettle, toaster, iron and breakfast counter.
Relax on the front veranda and watch the sun set with the guinea fowl and hadeda signaling the end of the day or have breakfast at the wooden combo set. Enjoy a braai in our Boer War Blockhouse lapa or outside in the garden (first bag of wood provided). From the garden a pathway leads down to an irrigation dam with a jetty and paddle boat. Children must be supervised.
Country House:
This spacious homestead has been furnished and equipped to a very high standard and retains much original charm and character.
It offers four bedrooms, a bathroom with shower over bath and second separate toilet. Lovely farmhouse style kitchen with coal / wood burning stove as well as a gas stove and fridge.
The dining room features an open fireplace for cozy winter evenings. The spacious separate sunroom is the perfect place to settle in with a book or a card game on a relaxing break.
There is no electricity, but everything works with gas and at night you are by candlelight and solar lamps.
The road to there is a farm road which needs a vehicle with a bit of a clearance.
Meals can also be provided by our on-site Cordon Bleu Chef if required eg: breakfast, brunch, lunch, high tea, dinner or a picnic basket.
Pause for a moment and experience true farm life: milk a cow, touch a sheep, feed a chicken or ride a horse.Hillston's diverse landscape provides a range of adventure. Look out for springbuck, fallow deer, blesbuck, mountain rhebuck, antbears, porcupines and more.
Visit our 100+ year old Boer War barracks, now used as the shearing shed for our Merino sheep and Angora goats. If you visit Hillston during shearing time, you can see our skilled shearers at work. All our shearing is done by hand. We also have a Boer War Blockhouse which has been converted into the braai lapa at the guest cottage. You can see where the bullet holes penetrated through the corrugated iron.
