Limpokwena Nature Reserve is a highly recommended Limpopo game lodge providing a wildlife experience for discerning anyone visiting Soutpansberg.
What to expect at the lodge/reserve
Set between the mighty Limpopo and Mogalakwena rivers and on the border between South Africa and Botswana, Limpokwena Nature Reserve is home to not only 2500 hectares of riverine forest and mopane bushveld but also to a great concentration and diversity of birdlife and wildlife.
Our lodge is best suited for family groups looking to get away for a while and regroup, or couples wanting to spend some quality time together in a tranquil and relaxing environment. Limpokwena is a small, unassuming lodge that prides itself on simplicity and appreciating the wilderness from a new perspective. Game drives with a qualified and experienced field guide is offered.
Accommodation at Limpokwena consists of a small, comfortable camp with 4 chalets and a small self catering cottage. The lodge is fenced in, affording young families the chance to explore safely within the camp grounds. There is also a communal swimming pool for the warm summer days.
The main area consists of a communal lounge and dining area, as well as a fully equipped kitchen. We offer self catering accommodation.
The chalets consist of a Queen-size bed, with the option of adding an additional 2 single beds per room for children. There is an en-suite bathroom which consists of a shower. The chalets are free standing for additional privacy and scattered throughout the well-maintained gardens. Paths through the gardens lead to the main lodge facilities.
The self catering family cottage is a self contained unit consisting of a twin bedroom with an en-suite shower and toilet, with a main bedroom, kitchenette, and outside barbecue facility. There is also a spacious loft upstairs equipped with additional beds of up to 4 single beds. All rooms are air-conditioned.
Limpokwena boasts a wide variety of fauna and flora. Many animals can be seen such as various kinds of buck, elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and many others.
Although the big game animals are always popular, there are the smaller species that can also be spotted, and in some cases, from the lodge grounds themselves. Regular sightings include the Nile Crocodile found along the banks of the rivers.

My wife and I spent 6 nights at Limpokwena with our two young adult children - what a gift! The bungalows were comfortable and spacious and we had the use of a fully equipped kitchen and lovely dining area, as well as outdoor pool and deck and a number of other seating/viewing areas. We were totally spoilt by not having to wash a single dish and every evening, the fire was lit and ready for our braai after returning from our game drive - thank you so much Gloria and Freddie!! What really stood out for us was the wonderfully personal game drive experiences provided by the manager Riley. He was so knowledgeable and passionate about what they are trying to achieve on the reserve and truly went the extra mile to make the drives as interesting and diverse as possible. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him and we were treated to delicious coffee and muffins or Amarula liqueur on the banks of the Limpopo River. He even came up with a very innovative idea to assist our daughter with a school art project! We highly recommend spending time at Limpokwena and look forward to returning again one day.
