The Vaal Dam in South Africa was constructed in 1938 and lies 77km south of OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg. The Vaal Dam is a playground for all forms of water sports and events – every year there is the Round the Island yacht race, the Keelboat Week, the Bayshore 200 kilometre jetski race and the Bayshore Marina Vaal Dam treasure hunt – and there are apparently more keelboats on the dam than at all of our coastal harbours. There are 10 sailing clubs and any number of fishermen, waterskiiers and canoeists also head out to the dam over weekends.
What is loadshedding? It refers to the temporary suspension of electricity provided by Eskom, South Africa's electricity provider, to reduce consumption and thereby the load on the national grid. To compensate, South African property owners are turning to solar power, inverters with backup batteries or in some cases generators to keep the power on, wherever feasible.
