Melkkamer is a property for self catering in De Hoop for anyone visiting the Cape Overberg region.
Melkkamer offers accommodation in three units in the De Hoop Nature Reserve. This World Heritage Site is a marine protected area and is home to a variety of marine life.
From here you are only three hours away from Cape Town and are within easy reach of the surrounding towns and a variety of attractions and activities.
All three cottages are fully equipped for self-catering or guests can drive to The Fig Tree Restaurant at the Opstal for dinner.
There is no electricity and all the units have gas powered appliances, with candlelight and lanterns adding to the romance and charm of this unique area. A generator is available for the Melkkamer Manor House and Melkkamer Foremans Cottage and is switched on at pre-determined times for the convenience of our guests.
Please see the individual unit descriptions with photographs below, to assist you with your choice.
Situated in the Overberg region near the southern tip of Africa, this very special reserve is under three hours from Cape Town. It is located near Arniston, Swellendam and the Breede River.
Interpretative walks through the fynbos to the rock pools and guided bird walks are just some of the activities available, as well as whale watching and game viewing. The magnificent night skies lend themselves to star and constellation identification.
Four mountain bike trails traverse the reserve allowing one to experience the full biodiversity of De Hoop. The recently introduced walking trail needs to be booked in advance and covers a similar coastline to the well established ‘Whale Trail.'
The Fig Tree Restaurant is quite the place to be and therefore packed in high season especially. Please ensure that you book a table for dinner to secure your spot on arrival or the day before.
The curio shop sells wood, firelighters and meat but it really is a gift shop and not a food shop. Firewood can be purchased at our Curio Shop or you are welcome to bring your own.
Run, hike or bike the trails at De Hoop. The trails at De Hoop Nature Reserve will unlock much more than your online app rewards this season, with 5 unique trails to choose from, ranging from a leisurely 12km, to a more challenging 55km route for the truly experienced – there is something for everyone.
Every year, some 40% of the world's southern right whales come to these shores to breed. Females and their calves swim in the clear waters, while males put on spectacular displays. These endangered mammals ensure that the De Hoop Reserve in South Africa, is one of the world's best land based whale watching areas.
As a marine reserve and World Heritage Site, De Hoop guarantees a safe nursery for these pods of visiting cetaceans. They come so close to the shore that visitors can relax on the unspoilt sand dunes, watching in awe as these beautiful creatures calve, blow, breach and belly-flop.
