Mkomazana Mountain Cottages is a property for self catering in Sani Pass for anyone visiting the Drakensberg region.
Mkomazana is an historical site situated within a trans-frontier peace park; an unique property nestled at the foot of the Sani Pass in the beautiful Sani Valley. It is a nature lover's paradise and possibly the Southern Drakensberg best-kept secret.
We have it all, flora; fauna (including otter, baboon, reedbuck and eland); a wide variety of birds (incl. black eagle, bearded vulture and fish eagle); provenance of people past (history; bushman paintings) waterfalls, crystal clear 'berg rivers and pools; dams. We guarantee you will not visit just once.
The accommodation is a charming combination of eclectic facilities consisting of two original and recently refurbished farmhouses and three picturesque new cottages with all home comforts. Each cottage or house has a fully equipped kitchen (including a stove, microwave, fridge, toaster, kettle, crockery, cutlery), bedding and towels and is serviced daily. Braai facilities are provided. Firewood available for sale.
Please see individual house decriptions with photos below to make your choice.
This former trading station from the 1800's era is perfectly situated for a range of outdoor activities including - high or low 'berg walking / backpacking / nature rambling / trout fishing (rates on request) / swimming in crystal clear mountain pools / mountain biking / bird watching. All of these activities can be undertaken from the property. You can also canoe or tube in the area (±20km away) and play golf, squash or tennis (±4ms away).
Whilst we wish to preserve the serenity of the area (and therefore do not allow motorbikes / quads to be ridden on the property), exhilarating fun for the adventurous can be had at the bottom of the driveway - test your 4x4 / mountain bike / motor bike skills on the famous and formidable Sani Pass which takes you up into the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. At the top of the Pass is the legendary "Sani Top Chalet" which lays claim to "the highest pub in Africa". NB: Bring your passport. If you do not have your own 4x4, tours up Sani Pass can be arranged (details on request).

Has such a rich history ! Had a lovely warm reception from our hostess Betty😀. Really enjoyed being treated to fresh homemade scones in the morning ! Bedding was warm. Accommodation was clean. Enjoyed the fireplace and wood provided . All in all a very pleasant experience ! Also can't get closer to the road up to Sani Pass .

Betty was very friendly and welcoming and her and her husband provided us with useful advice and information. The cottage we stayed in, Rose Cottage, was clean, comfortable and well equipped and had an old-fashioned charm. Toiletries, tissues and, on request, a hair dryer were provided. The old safes bricked into the walls of the living/bedroom and kitchen provided evidence of the building's previous existence as part of a trading post. Although the WiFi connection was stronger outside the adjacent cottage, we managed to receive a signal inside Rose Cottage. The freshly baked scones brought every morning by a member of staff were delicious. The views from the grounds of the cottages and the hill behind are amazing. We climbed part way up the latter and found the path easy to follow and not particularly strenuous. During the hike we saw various antelope and a chameleon and had clear views of the Sani Pass, which we had travelled up the previous day.
