About Opstal Equipped Cottages

Situated in the Overberg region near the southern tip of Africa, this very special reserve is under three hours from Cape Town. De Hoop Nature Reserve is located near Arniston, Swellendam and the Breede River.

Self Catering Accommodation

These well-appointed cottages are a stylish and affordable accommodation option in the hub of the reserve. The cottages have fully equipped kitchens, comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms supplied with fresh linen and towels.

There is one Three-bedroomed cottage (Eland) and there are six Two-bedroom cottages (Mountain Zebra, Bontebok, Baboon, Steenbok, Duiker and Grysbok). All the cottages have outdoor braai facilities. Please see the individual cottage descriptions with photograpohs below, to assist you with your choice.

On Site Facilities

The Fig Tree Restaurant is quite the place to be and therefore packed in high season especially. Please ensure that you book a table for dinner to secure your spot on arrival or the day before.

The curio shop sells wood, firelighters and meat but it really is a gift shop and not a food shop. Firewood can be purchased at our Curio Shop or you are welcome to bring your own.

Activities & Attractions

Run, hike or bike the trails at De Hoop. The trails at De Hoop Nature Reserve will unlock much more than your online app rewards this season, with 5 unique trails to choose from, ranging from a leisurely 12km, to a more challenging 55km route for the truly experienced – there is something for everyone.

Few other reserves offer as complete an outdoor experience as De Hoop – sea, sand dunes, the vlei, a floral sensation of rare fynbos plants, diverse antelope and the Potberg Mountains. Birders observe wading birds on the shores of the vlei while the Potberg Mountains are home to a colony of endangered Cape vultures.

Hikers and cyclists have close-up encounters with bontebok, Cape mountain zebra, eland, baboons and ostrich. Activities are diverse and guests choose between various day walks through the rich fynbos plains or along the deserted coastline, or mountain biking along the many gravel roads or scenic game drives.

Lazing on the beach and snorkeling in the many turquoise rock pools is simply another way to pass a rewarding day. Day visitors welcome, and restaurant open daily.

Whale Watching

Every year, some 40% of the world's southern right whales come to these shores to breed. Females and their calves swim in the clear waters, while males put on spectacular displays. These endangered mammals ensure that the De Hoop Reserve in South Africa, is one of the world's best land based whale watching areas.

As a marine reserve and World Heritage Site, De Hoop guarantees a safe nursery for these pods of visiting cetaceans. They come so close to the shore that visitors can relax on the unspoilt sand dunes, watching in awe as these beautiful creatures calve, blow, breach and belly-flop..
