Osfontein Guest Farm is a highly recommended property for self catering in Carnarvon for anyone visiting the Upper Karoo region.
Situated in Carnarvon, Osfontein Guest Farm offers self catering accommodation in corbelled houses, an old stone shed and a tree house (the first tree house accommodation in the heart of the Karoo).
Corbelled houses have a unique history and only appear in a small area of the Karoo. They were the first houses built in the 1800's by the Voortrekkers and, due to a shortage of building materials such as wood, they were built entirely of stone making them warm during the winter months and surprisingly cool during summer.
Choose from The Corbelled House, sleeping four guests, The Old Stone Shed, sleeping four adults and one child or The Tree House which sleeps two guests but is only used from the end of September to April – it is too cold otherwise!
Please see the individual unit descriptions with photographs below, to assist you with your choice.
Fires can be made outside and wood can be bought at the farmhouse. The farmhouse is within walking distance if anything is needed and also has a swimming pool where guests can cool off.
With all the wide open spaces, guests can go for long walks or head of on their mountain bikes. Sitting outside you will see the incredible star filled Karoo sky at night. This is the ideal place for guests who want absolute privacy and do not want to hear noisy cars or people, just the absolute tranquility of a Karoo farm, surrounded by the veld.
What is loadshedding? It refers to the temporary suspension of electricity provided by Eskom, South Africa's electricity provider, to reduce consumption and thereby the load on the national grid. To compensate, South African property owners are turning to solar power, inverters with backup batteries or in some cases generators to keep the power on, wherever feasible.

We enjoyed our stay tremendously. It gave us the experience of staying in a +/- 200 year old Corbelled house with modern facilities. We opted for a candle lit evening and due the cold had an indoor braai. The owner arranged Karoo lamb chops for us that was excellent. The silence of the Karoo was something to experience. Starlit skies!
