About Phumelelo Lodge

The Phumelo Lodge offers luxury accommodation in very special African-themed, thatch-roof chalets. The lodge is located on a hill in a 12 000-hectare private game reserve, which is home to the Big 5. The lodge is situated in the greater Mabalingwe Nature Reserve, in the Waterberg Mountains overlooking a river, 50 km from Bela-Bela.

Accommodation

The Phumelo Lodge offers luxury accommodation in very special African-themed, thatch-roof chalets.

Each chalet is tastefully furnished with a designer four-poster, king-size bed and features an en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower. Additionally, each chalet has climate-controlled air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV with DStv hotel channels or full DStv channels, and tea, coffee, and hot chocolate-making facilities with complimentary rusks and gourmet biscuits.

Each chalet also boasts a wraparound deck with waterproof outdoor furniture.

Lodge Facilities

The central lodge complex has a romantically appointed dining area, a lounge with fireplace, a cocktail bar with viewing deck, a cozy open-air boma, swimming pool with large sundeck and an indoor / outdoor lounging area.

Meals are served in the dining area of the main building. A light lunch is available at an additional cost. The lodge also features a guest lounge with access to free Wi-Fi and a swimming pool.

Guests can enjoy a sunset game drive with an experienced ranger in an open 4x4 game vehicle at an additional fee per person. These game drives include snacks with drinks at an additional charge, as well as blankets for those chilly evenings.

The elevated upper deck offers stunning views across the plains and river.

Location

It takes only two hours to reach Phumelelo Lodge from Johannesburg (OR Tambo International Airport) and just about an hour and 30 minutes from Pretoria, travelling via the N1 to Polokwane.

Activities

Phumelelo Lodge has traversing rights over more than 12, 000 hectares of malaria free private game reserve – home to the ‘Big 5′. Guests can enjoy an early morning or afternoon game drive with an experienced ranger in our open 4 x 4 game vehicle. These game drives include snacks and drinks, and blankets for those chilly winter evenings.

Like many other private Game Reserves, the lions in our reserve are contained in a separate high security, fenced area of the reserve. It is necessary to book for a visit to the Mabalingwe lion enclosure; visits to the lion enclosure at Mabalingwe should be pre-booked after arrival and will be subject to space availability, based on the limited number of permitted visitors for each scheduled game drive / viewing experience. Visitors are not always guaranteed to see the lions as they can be elusive.

We recommend an excursion to visit the lion cubs, cheetah run and snakes at Zebula Golf Estate & Spa where Phumelelo Lodge guests will have access to the hotel, golf course, shop and health spa. It is located just 20 minutes drive from the Lodge in our 4 x 4 vehicle, via our private access road through the reserve with an opportunity for an additional game drive along the way.

Green fees, hire of golf clubs and carts are available to guests of Phumelelo Lodge at special rates and transfers to / from Zebula can be provided by the Lodge and should be arranged on arrival.
