About Rogge Cloof
The origins of the farm and dark sky reserve Rogge Cloof, meaning rye ravine, date back to 1756. Since then over more than 250 years, various owners have loved, nurtured and developed these hostile lands enduring lions, droughts, snow and freezing winds. Located at an altitude of between 1400 to 1700 metres, with magnificent clear skies and expansive plains, Rogge Cloof accommodation is truly home to the greatest heavens on earth.

The Reserve has gravel roads, which are accessible to ordinary sedan vehicles at most times. During rainy or snow weather, SUV or 4x4 vehicles are recommended.
The Area
Mention the town of Sutherland and most people will know that this is the place people go to look at the skies. And they would be right. Almost 120 kilometres due north of Matjiesfontein in the Roggeveld of the Karoo, Sutherland is a space of clear, dark night skies. It's where one can marvel at the star scapes that sweep the outer limits, and where astronomers come to use the telescopes of the South African Astronomical Observatory.

Highly recommend Rogge Cloof to anyone wanting to stay on Sutherland. Such a wonderful experience! Everything was such a delight from the incredible views and game life on the reserve, to the delicious food and exceptional service. They pay attention to the smallest details to make your stay really memorable and I can't wait to go back again. I promise it's even better than the pictures, and if you don't believe me- go look at all the wonderful reviews they have had!
