The Bakoni Hide-Away is a highly recommended property for self catering in Schoemanskloof for up to 4 guests visiting the Highlands Meander region.
The Bakoni Hide-Away is an off-the-grid retreat, boasting ideal accommodation for a romantic getaway for lovers of the African bush. The house is located on the Fish Falls Farm in Schoemanskloof. Unfenced, it is set on a remote spot on the side of a mountain with abundant birdlife, buck and other game around.
The Bakoni Hide-Away is a self catering holiday home with architecture that was inspired by the many stone circles that occur in this region and the Bakoni people who are believed to have roamed the area in the past.
The cottage sleeps two guests in one room. The King-size bed with a thick overlay can be separated into two comfy single beds if preferred. The en-suite bathroom has a dual shower. An additional extra guest, two at a squeeze can be accommodated on two mattresses on the mezzanine floor above the lounge.
There is a gas stove and a fridge in the kitchen. There is a fire place in the lounge as well as a gas heater for cold winter evenings. The geyser provides extremely hot water but, in rainy weather, may take time to warm up.
Plug points are provided for charging laptops and phones (but not hairdryers). Front wall of glass doors opens cottage to the bush and there is a loft reading area.
The cottage is ideal for birders and nature lovers familiar with the African bush who will delight in perhaps seeing a porcupine, jackal, buck or other wildlife drinking in the little rock pool close to the house if they are lucky! Lovely walks lead you to two waterfalls and some very special stone circle ruins that the area is known for. The cottage is not fenced in and a small rock pond has been created nearby to attract birds and game for closer viewing so this is the only cottage on our property that is not pet-friendly.
The Bakoni Hide-Away is also aimed at guests who are concerned about our global environment. It is off the grid with all power being provided by a solar geyser and batteries. The geyser provides extremely hot water but, in rainy weather, may take time to warm up. Plug points are provided for charging laptops and phones (but not hairdryers) and there is a very spacious fridge / freezer.
The cottage is off the grid with hot water being provided by a very efficient solar geyser. A large fridge/freezer is available and a gas hob and outside fire place are provided for cooking. A large iron cast "potjie" pot is available for slow cooking on the fire.
A vehicle with high clearance is required to reach the hide-away (4x4 only necessary in wet weather). The owners will happily shuttle their guests to the cottage at the beginning and end of their stay at no extra cost. Please note that extra transfers during your stay are available at an additional charge.
Although the property is in a remote mountainous area, there are a number of attractions and activities within approximately 20km of the centre of Schoemanskloof.
