About The Merry Crab Beach Lodge

The Merry Crab is a secure, informal holiday hideaway carved out of the lush, tropical Admiralty Reserve and only a pathway away from a beach so pretty, film-makers have used it for movie sets! The Merry Crab is among the most ideal locations from which to experience one of nature's greatest mysteries.

Fringing the Indian Ocean the resort, set in 4050 square meters of sub-tropical coastal forest, is approximately 75 paces from one of the prettiest and most unspoilt beaches along our coastline - a 15 minute drive from Margate Airport, an two hour drive from King Shaka International Airport and only a 10 minute drive from three championship golf courses.

Secure and secluded, it is unique in concept and was designed with attention to detail and utmost privacy in mind. The surrounding area is habitat to a myriad of birdlife as well as numerous species of antelope, monkey, genet cat, monitor lizards etc.

Strategically positioned to take best advantage of the Indian Ocean, the (bachelor pad), Studios, the (1 bedroom suite), Casitas and the (2 bedroom, 2 bathroom), Cabanas are especially designed for coolness, their white walls and 'stone-flagged' floor interiors, cool in contrast to the mud-tinged (cornflower blue door and window), exteriors.

Large paddle fans lazily stir the air inside. Each unit has its own private wooden sun-deck. The terracotta tiled roofs, obscured by wild palms and giant strelitzia, impart a feel of our Indian Ocean islands.

ACCOMMODATION

We offer Studio units that sleep 2 and Casista's that sleep four. For larger groups you can book a Cabana which is made up of one studio and one Casita.

Fully equipped, you can be assured of superior beds, white linen, bath towels, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, stoves, microwaves, fridges, kettles, toasters and limited MNet and built-in braais.

Every unit has its own built-in wall safe and remote control for the automated entrance gates. Secure parking is provided.

We have solar to keep your lights, TV and appliances on during loadshedding. There is also an uninterrupted supply of borehole water.

The Boma

A 'Potjie Boma', a thatched enclosure, ideal for parties, braais and potjies.

Facilities

Hidden high amongst the ancient (and protected), Milkwood trees is a birders' hide, a 'tree-house' which is also an excellent 'look out' post. There's a furnished lounge area under thatch which also houses a cosy bar. Wild I'lala palms tower over the adjoining pool, a sapphire by night, giving the illusion of an 'oasis'.

Pet-friendly Policy

People- and animal-friendly, socialised dogs and other pets are welcome at The Merry Crab. They can sleep inside the units, but are not permitted on the furniture. All pets must be free of ticks and fleas. Dogs can only be accommodated in the family units (Casita / Cabana), as these have enclosed decks. Pets must never be left unattended, whether inside or outside the units. Owners must bring beds, towels, blankets and bowls for their pets.

Pets must be on a lead at all times and can be walked around the units, in the common areas of the garden, and on the beach. Owners need to clean up thoroughly after them (picking up their poop, not covering it with sand).
