The Agter-Pakhuis Valley, which marks the northern reach of the Cederberg Mountains as they fade out into the rolling hills of the Karoo, is just more than 20km east of Clanwilliam, towards the historic Moravian village of Wupperthal or heading out to Calvinia.
This prehistoric area is home to several unique plant and wildflower species, as well as leopard, rooikat, baboon, mountain hare, porcupine and a plethora of other wild creatures. The valley hosts an incredibly dense gallery of !Xam and Khoi rock paintings and sites of archaeological interest. Other attractions include hiking trails, Storytellers Fynbos Apothecary natural products workshop, Sevilla Rock Art Trail, wine tasting, viewing the wildflowers in Spring, visiting the Calvinia Museum and rock climbing.
What is loadshedding? It refers to the temporary suspension of electricity provided by Eskom, South Africa's electricity provider, to reduce consumption and thereby the load on the national grid. To compensate, South African property owners are turning to solar power, inverters with backup batteries or in some cases generators to keep the power on, wherever feasible.
