Still in its beginning stages as a park, the Madikwe Game Reserve is about 70 000 hectares of bushland just north of the little town of Groot Marico that stretches all the way up to the Botswana border, about 3 hours' drive from Johannesburg. Young it might be - having opened its gates, so to speak, only in August 1991 - but not only is it is one of South Africa's largest and most popular game ... cont.
Please DO NOT follow your GPS to Madikwe Safari Lodge. Many of the prescribed roads are not navigable in a normal vehicle. Via Abjaterskop Gate Route (±4.5 to 5 hours): -
From O.R. Tambo International Airport
Ffollowing the airport exit signs (R21/R24)
Take the R21 Pretoria off-ramp, and drive straight on for 34km
Turn off at the exit 134, take the N1 Polokwane, and drive straight on for 22km
Turn off at the exit 156, take the N4 Rustenburg, and drive straight on for 236km until you reach Zeerust (there are four toll plazas en route)
In Zeerust, remember to refuel as there are no fuel stations on the reserve
Turn right at President Street
Take the R47/R49 Gaborone/Madikwe on-ramp, and drive straight on for 83km Abjaterskop Gate into Madikwe Game Reserve will be on your right
Friendly gate staff will confirm your reservation and direct you on to Madikwe Safari Lodge
After passing through the gate, drive straight on for 11km until you reach a T-junction
At the T-junction, turn left at the sign for Derdepoort, and drive straight on for 10km
You will pass through Ambush Alley, cross a junction, and drive straight on until you see a sign for Madikwe Safari Lodge.
Turn right here off the main road, and drive straight on to the lodges.
