Early travellers would not have had an easy time of attempts to negotiate the Hottentot's Holland Mountain range, which stretches along the eastern side of Somerset West and Gordons Bay. The summit provides one with the most awe-inspiring backdrops in the Western Cape - on a clear day you can view the range all the way from the southern suburbs of Cape Town. Today, Sir Lowry's Pass allows ... cont.
From the N2:
Driving on the N2, turn off at the Sir Lowry's Pass Village exit at the foot of the Pass (where there is a large set of traffic lights). From Cape Town, it's 5 km after Somerset West on the left, and from George it's just at the bottom of the pass on the right. Follow that road through the village and go over the railway tracks. Immediately turn right. Take the first left (after 200 m) onto a brick road. The sign on the corner says ‘Wedderwill' and there's a building behind that called ‘Kingdom Builders Ministries'.
Approx 1 km along this brick road, take the 2nd left which is just before Knorhoek Estate. Drive over a small bridge, follow the road around to the right and go through the Wedderwill Estate security gate. Follow the brick road up the hill for 1.2 km and turn left into Lalapanzi Lodge (Farm 3) which is oddly enough after Farm 1, 2 and 4!
From Somerset West:
Drive east along Main Road heading towards Sir Lowry's Pass Village. Drive all the way through Somerset West passing Checkers on your left and Pick ‘N' Pay on your right. Continue on Main Road and at the robot/traffic light by Vergelegen Medi Clinic turn left onto the M9 – Sir Lowry's Pass Road. Continue on the road to Sir Lowry's Pass Village (about 5 km). Pass the Journey's End sign and 300 m later take the first left onto a red brick road.
