I am very sad to write a negative comment about what I had anticipated to be an awesome overnight stay for my birthday with my husband. I am also at fault as I should have read the description more closely, but I also think it is not correctly described. I would also like to add that at R1 000 per night for a couple, this isn't cheap, so perhaps my expectation for what I was going to receive was based on the time old value for money proposition. At R1 000 per night I expected it to be a great experience. The boat is moored too close to the bank, because at low tide when the water goes out, the boat beaches at a very odd angle, and everything leans terribly to the middle of the river (glasses slide off the table). Some of these photos show where it was moored further out, which I am sure would work a lot better. The bed makes no sense - you have to physically climb over your partner to get out of the bed and in the middle of the night to be woken up like this isn't romantic - it was scary as you didn't know what was going on!!!!! The "sleeper couch" isn't a sleeper couch. It is a caravan style seating area that isn't terribly comfortable to sit on. THIS IS A FLOATING CARAVAN VS A HOUSEBOAT in my humble opinion. Might I also suggest that some steps be fashioned at the back of the boat to allow one to get back into the boat if you decide to pop into the water for a quick swim. Unless you are a gym bunny with tons of upper body strength, there is no ways that the average person can get back onto the boat from the water. We had to swim to shore and get back onto the the boat via the jetty down the gangplank back on the boat. We had no water when we arrived. There was also no hot water on board. I think it would be quite important to mention that unless you are a family, I don't think this accommodation is really suitable for friends etc with the close quarters and the toilet that is basically next to the persons head in the double bed and you can hear every sound that is made in there..... The bar stools out the back have not footrests, which makes sitting there for longer periods very uncomfortable. Might I suggest some camping chairs for the deck - they would be far more comfortable. Now for the positives - I did like the fact that the kitchen was well equipped. The bedding was first class (duck down duvet, white bedding and mosquito net). The host thoughtfully left coffee, juice, milk and a chocolate for us, which was awesome!

Maggie May is a unique, fun place to stay in the Colchester area. The boat is small, but well equipped with everything you'll need. If you love the water, this place is not to be missed.

A lovely little getaway at a good price. Clean and comfortable, although a bit small for a 6ft 4" person :) Evenings on the deck were lovely. I am a bit sad that it doesn't leave the shore. I think it could be greatly improved if the boat could move to a more secluded spot a couple of times. But it was lovely.
