I've stayed in a lot of hotels in my life but never before had a welcome briefing like this. "Shut the gate," she said, "because the hippos like to wander in and eat the grass at night." She wasn't joking - that very night I was out in my hire car and met a massive mutha and her calf just strolling down the street. I stopped, backed away slowly and let them pass. Whalesong B&B is part of South Africa's elite Portfolio collection of places to stay, a brand that proved consistently good last time my wife and I visited South Africa. The standards have evidently been maintained and, as before, it was the personal attention of our host that made this a great visit. Of course the room was comfortable and clean and the breakfast excellent. What made this different was the helpful way our host helped us make the most of our time in an amazing small town surrounded by wetlands and wildlife. St Lucia's human resident population (400) is far outnumbered by the resident hippos (800), crocodiles and many other creatures a short drive or boat ride away. At 700+ km distant from Johannesburg St Lucia takes some getting to but it's well worth it. Just start the drive early morning, or split it somewhere like Ermelo, as you don't want to be driving on the unlit, unmarked country roads at night when you might meet a three ton hippo round the corner.

Everything Just adds up here. We booked our stay on very last notice and arrived way before check in Time. No problem at all here. Our room was already prepared, we even got a free upgrade. Our Hostess Toni was very helpfull with all our queries. The room was spacious, clean and gave us a warm welcome feeling. Outsider area was very well maintained and looked great. Breakfast was very nice with freshly baked bread, very good coffee and lots of choices. Would definately go back here.

We had the loveliest stay in this wounderful guesthouse. Our hosts, Marc and Barbara, were most helpful and friendly. The rooms are luxurious and comformtable, the breakfast is a dream. We recommend this place to everyone who is planning a trip to St. Lucia.
